After the release
of THE CRIMSON IDOL, Blackie Lawless left Capitol Records and
took the W.A.S.P. namesake with him, although contractually he
still owed Capitol/EMI one more recording. That record wound up
being FIRST BLOOD, LAST CUTS, a best of W.A.S.P. collection. Along
with 14 W.A.S.P. classics, FIRST BLOOD, LAST CUTS also featured
two brand new songs: "Sunset & Babylon" and "Rock
& Roll To Death."
"When we put out
THE CRIMSON IDOL album we had a song "Chainsaw Charlie"
that ruffled a lot of feathers with the president of the company
at the time," explains Blackie Lawless. "I hated the bastard
anyway and I wasn't going to compromise my music so he thought the
song was about him. I don't know which line bothered him the most
'I'm a lying motherfucker' or 'I'm a cocksucking asshole' but we
created a lot of friction. Capitol had gotten to the point that
they were no longer going to be the label that supported this kind
of music. Even when we did HEADLESS, EMI was not happy with it but
when it became our biggest seller they had to shut up. The same
thing happened when I did CRIMSON IDOL, they did not believe in
the record, it came out and it ended up being the best thing I had
ever done."
